Small Westport Law Firm On List Of Firms Representing America's Biggest Companies
Westport, CT, Dec. 14, 2006 — The Westport-based law firm of Begos & Horgan recently found itself in the land of giants. When America's biggest companies were recently asked to name the law firms they routinely turn to for legal advice, Begos & Horgan was the only Fairfield County-based firm named. They are also one of the smallest firms identified.
For the last five years, Corporate Counsel magazine has surveyed the Fortune 250's general counsel, asking them to name their primary law firms in four key areas: litigation, corporate transactions, labor and employment and intellectual property. It was Begos & Horgan's substantial litigation work for UnumProvident Corporation that put them on the Corporate Counsel list.
"The firms on the list include some of the largest law firms in the world, with 2,000 or more lawyers," says Patrick Begos, a founding partner of the firm. "Begos & Horgan is one of only two Connecticut-based firms on the list, and we're also one of only a handful of firms with fewer than five attorneys." Others on the list include legal giants like Baker & McKenzie (3,000 attorneys), Jones Day (2,000 attorneys) and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagan & Flom (1,750 attorneys). Begos & Horgan has three attorneys.
"These companies have unlimited options when it comes to choosing who is going to represent them. We have to feel honored that our client has chosen us as one of its primary litigators," says Begos. This is especially true when one of the watchwords among big corporations these days is "convergence" — where companies have fewer law firms providing more services. Begos & Horgan has been able to buck this trend, and establish itself as a key source of litigation services for its clients.
"When you realize that Fairfield County has one of the highest concentrations of Fortune 500 companies and that we are the only Fairfield County-based firm on the list, we are particularly pleased," says Begos.
